Body Somatization of Trauma

By Steffani Grace

What is Somatization?

Somatization is the process through which unresolved emotional experience, particularly grief and trauma, becomes expressed in and through the physical body. When the nervous system cannot fully process an experience in the moment, the body stores it. Over time, this can show up as chronic tension, fatigue, pain, digestive disturbances, anxiety, or a persistent sense of being "stuck" in survival mode.

Recognizing somatization invites us to listen to the body as a keeper of story, not a problem to be silenced. Healing begins when the body is met with curiosity, compassion, and safety.

Polyvagal Theory & the Nervous System

Polyvagal theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, describes how the vagus nerve mediates our shifts between safety, mobilization (fight or flight), and shutdown. Trauma can leave the nervous system patterned toward defense, even long after the original experience has ended. Somatic practices gently retrain the body toward states of regulated, embodied safety.

Benefits of Somatic Healing

  • Restored sense of safety and presence within the body
  • Release of stored tension, grief, and emotional residue
  • Improved nervous system regulation and resilience
  • Greater capacity to feel, name, and move through emotion
  • Reconnection with intuition, vitality, and self-trust

Types of Somatic Exercises

Somatic work takes many forms: breathwork, grounding practices, orienting to the senses, gentle tapping, movement, sound, guided imagery, and embodied meditation. Each practice is offered slowly, with consent and choice, allowing the body to titrate what it is ready to release.

A Somatic Rebirthing Practice

In facilitated sessions, participants are guided into a grounded, meditative state where the body is invited to soften and release what it has been holding. Sessions close with gentle bodily tapping to return fully into present awareness, followed by time to process anything that surfaced, alone or with the facilitator.
